June is Pride Month

Posted On Friday June 03, 2022
As Catholics, we are called to love one another. We believe every human being is created in the image and likeness of God and should always be treated with dignity, compassion and respect. During the month of June, we support and acknowledge our 2SLGBTQ+ students, family members, staff and community members in particular. We are committed to ensuring that our Catholic schools are safe places for people to learn and work.

On Tuesday, May 31, 2022 we were excited to welcome students from across all of our high schools to our first in-person 2SLGBTQ+ Student Summit at the Pope Francis Center. During the day, students were invited to network with one another and provide input and share their feedback on our Multi-Year Strategic Planning process. The students also worked in groups to respond to the questions:
  • How can we build safe spaces in our school communities?
  • What do you need to see, hear and feel when you are in school?
  • What can be done to instill hope within the 2SLGBTQ community in our schools?
  • What school, board and community level supports do you need to realize a safe and caring space for all members of the 2SLGBTQ community?
The day culminated in the raising of the Rainbow Flag at the Catholic Education Center in honour of Pride Month.

It is vital that we continue to make this a key focus for future learning and create accepting and safe schools so all students and staff can thrive. As educators, we recognize that we have a responsibility to lead and inspire change that is necessary to create inclusive and accepting schools. We know we have more work to do and have made this a key priority as part of our Equity Action Plan.
